Standard #2: Learning Differences
The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
The standard I selected is learning differences, which focuses on the teacher’s role in creating an environment that supports both individual and group learning. This includes promoting positive social interactions, active engagement, and self-motivation. In my community-based instruction plan, I discussed various strategies to support both individual and collaborative learning. When working with special education students, I believe it’s essential to plan ahead and have solutions in place. For example, the assignment I worked on involved creating a plan for a special education student to participate in a social activity, such as purchasing something at Shaws. This experience has helped me identify environments that foster learning, both academic and social/emotional.
This assignment has made me a better teacher by showing me how much planning goes into even a simple task like going to Shaws. Before completing this assignment, I didn’t fully appreciate the complexity of creating an instructional plan. Now, I understand that it requires careful planning and multiple steps to develop a plan that truly supports a student. I’ve learned that to help a student succeed, it’s necessary to remove any obstacles in their way.
