The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global
issues.

For my artifact, I will be using my TPT dumpster dive, where I created a lesson on being a good citizen for Kindergarteners. The learning objective of my lesson was that students would know what it means to be a good citizen. My lesson went like this.

I DO- 10 minutes talk about being a good citizen in the classroom and what it exactly means. Have students brainstorm with neighbors some ideas they have. Bring the class back together and ask students to contribute some ideas.

WE DO: 10 minutes, watch the video together as a class, then make a list on the board of what it means to be a good citizen, along with the citizen definition. Let students contribute ideas that you can write up on the board. Let the first few examples on the list be things that you came up with.

YOU DO- 20 minutes break students into small groups, pass out worksheets, let them use the board to help them with writing and spelling their answers on the page, let them color and make it pretty when they’re done. Tell students they are allowed to draw what they want to write if they can’t show you through writing.

Standard #5 means that the teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical/creative thinking, and collaborative problem-solving related to authentic local and global issues. I believe in this lesson I showed ways to engage learners in critical and creative thinking. For example, having class discussions facilitates critical thinking and that is something that was included in my lesson. An indicator of Standard #5 is that Candidates use a wide range of resources to present divergent viewpoints, which was also done in my lesson. I used teachers’ pay teachers and YouTube to assist me. Another indicator of standard #5 is that Candidates use questioning techniques and flexible learning environments to promote independent learning. When using a scaffolding technique (I do, we do, you do) I believe it helps promote independent thinking and learning. I also included several examples of differentiation in my lesson which promotes a flexible learning environment.

I believe that this assignment will help me as a future educator because the more and more I create lessons, the more resources I find and the better I get at it. As I continue to develop lessons I feel that I become more comfortable with it. I also think that my differentiation tactics in this lesson could be very useful across many lessons. Overall I feel this artifact will help me as a future educator, I may even teach it in my classroom!
